Jasola Working Women’s Hostel (JWWH)
The Ministry of Women and Child Development jointly with Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India has set up the Working Women’s Hostel, Jasola Vihar, New Delhi for women of the North eastern States and other women in search of a home in Delhi, in order to provide safe, comfortable and affordable accommodation. The Management of the Hostel was entrusted to the YWCA of Delhi in August 2011. Jasola Hostel since its inception has always maintained its motto of “Service with a Smile”, which is evident in its ever increasing occupancy with residents from different parts of the country.
Feedback from residents, parents, guardians and the visiting dignitaries plays a major role in upgrading the hostel facilities on a regular basis. An active Resident committee joins hands with the hostel staff to make hostel life more comfortable and enjoyable for the residents by its constant monitoring and consequent suggestions which are earnestly implemented.
JWWH has 167 triple sharing rooms with bed capacity of 501, it has a Dining Hall with Mess facilities to meet the diverse taste of the residents, T.V. Lounge on every floor, Visitor rooms, Guest Rooms, adequate parking space, Generator Back-up and Lift facilities. Rooms upto the 5th floor are being occupied presently
In keeping with the three quadrennial goals we are proudly implementing them as follows:
- Justice Beyond Borders:
JWWH believes in inter-cultural activities, where girls from different states mingle together to form a happy family, for worship, entertainment or serious discussions. One of the remarkable activities started in the year gone by, is where residents from different states take charge of the kitchen to share recipes from their respective states. This in turn becomes a part of the Menu each month, providing each one a rich and unique experience of the culinary skills of that particular state.
- Visioning with the young:
JWWH has always believed in encouraging the younger generation, who will carry forward the beacon of light and hope for all to see and follow in the years to come. The resident committee is a living witness to “youth power”. This committee is actively involved in all spheres of hostel life; be it handling of complaints from the peers, outsiders etc, devotional evenings highlighting all religions, holding cultural programmes to coincide with each festival in India, or deciding the Menu of the day, they do it all, in consultation and counsel with the hostel staff.
- Be a Green Ambassador: JWWH has planted a lot of saplings in the campus throughout the year in order to join the green revolution. The garden boasts of a variety of trees and plants ranging from mango, jamun, neem, pomegranate to name a few. A constant effort is made to upgrade and maintain the green environment surrounding the hostel. To encourage and appreciate the work of the gardeners of all departments, a competition was organised on World Environment day to select the Green Ambassador of the Day, in which the staff and the gardeners together set up corners with decorative greenery. The cooperation, confidence and mutual support of all staff and the gardeners were the first of its kind witnessed in the YWCA of Delhi.
To create harmony and a feeling of home away from home, many events were held during this year.
- Diwali:
Festival of lights was celebrated with lot of fun and frolic by the resident girls with lights but no crackers. The decorations and delicious food relative to the festival is much looked forward to. This helped the residents to bond with each other in a very enriching and harmonious way.
- Christmas:
The Christmas Celebrations at JWWH are unique with the theme and this year the theme was “A Village Mela”. Set up in the central lawn with a real village creation, it had Carol Singing, colourful stalls of food, clothes and jewellery, set up by the residents showcasing the speciality of their states. The mela culminated with cultural performances from different states, followed by a sumptuous dinner, making the evening “Just the One” you would have loved to witness and carry home with you fond memories of the evening.
- Valentine’s Day:
A Movie Night “Lost Valentine” was screened at night commemorating the day of love.
- Easter Week (25-27 March):
Celebrated with prayer, painting of colourful Easter Eggs, distributing of Bible verses as book marks, relevant to Easter and a movie night when the “ End of Spear” was screened.
- Holi:
The festival of colours was celebrated with fun and frolic followed by a special lunch.
- Mother’s Day:
A week-long event started with residents praying for their mother sharing the best recipes of each ones’ mother on to penning down their feelings and love for their mothers in the form of cards, posters, painting and poem which was all displayed on a well decorated notice board. The festival saw a burst of emotions from the young hearts.
